Our Story

About Us_2.jpg

We believe people of all ages can learn about their environment and the animals that they share it with through personal connection with a variety of species.

We started the Bar C Ranch in 2000 when we moved to Clarke County, Virginia in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. We have both worked with animals in zoos and on farms for many years and Jen has a degree in Animal Science from Virginia Tech. Our two children make up the rest of the human crew at the Bar C Ranch. We are also very lucky to have many friends and family members who are willing to lend them a helping hand for which we are most grateful. Our family also includes many non-human members who help to keep life on the Bar C Ranch fun and busy.

We are a licensed zoological facility specializing in offsite educational animal experiences for people of all ages. From a small start consisting of a couple of goats, our family dogs, a donkey and a pony who liked to watch TV through the living room window, our animal family has grown significantly. Over the years, a variety of animals have come into our care and our family now includes over 30 different species ranging from camels and kangaroos to snakes and spiders. It has also been our pleasure to foster animals for other zoos and farms. It is a source of constant joy to get to know the many different individual personalities and to share these incredible animals with other. Click here to meet some of our animal family.

The Bar C Ranch is operated with the idea that it is vital for people to learn about the animals with whom we share the earth. Our hope is that by having the opportunity to meet some of these animals personally, people will develop a stronger interest in and sense of responsibility for the world around them. It is our pleasure to share our love and knowledge of animals with people of all ages.
